The Impact of Authoritarian Learning on Reforms & Legitimacy of Contested Regimes." at the Joint Sessions of the European Consortium for Political Research (ECPR) 02-03/04/2014 - Berlin Workshop on Understandings of Democracy in the Arab World I participated in the BBAW Demokratietagung at the Berlin-Brandenburgische Akademie der Wissenschaft (BBAW). This is again an event held in the series "Zukunftsorte Europas". In which I will jointly be moderating a panel discussion with Niklas Kossow on the understandings of democracy in the world with interesting discussants such as Xiaobo Lü (Columbia University), Nora Lafi (Zentrum Moderner Orient) and Sina Birkholz (University of Bielefeld). The audio record of the debate is available in the BBAW Mediathek Furthermore I was conducting a workshop on the understandings of democracy in teh Arab World with a collegue from the Studienkolleg zu Berlin Laura Führer and Thomas Claes from the Friedrich Ebert Stiftung. In this open workshop we will talk about particularities and commonalities of meanings of democracy in the Arab World trying to find out if such thing as a common Arab understanding is a suitable approach at all. Here is the full programm of the event. 24/03 and 25/03/2014 - Berlin Process Tracing Workshop Derek Beach (University of Aarhus) was giving a two-day Process Tracing Workshop at Hertie School of Governance in which I participated to deepen my knwoledge on process tracing with a particular focus on how to apply it in my own research. It was a great course that gave me a lot of hands on advise. 21/03/2014 - Berlin BGSS Research Working Group International Diffusion of contention and Resilience during the Arab Uprisings (organizer) Presenting the Paper: "Legitimacy through Reform? The Impact of Authoritarian Learning on Reforms & Legitimacy of Contested Regimes." Together with two fellow PhD candidates from the BGSS we convened an intensive one day workshop with the Research Working Group on trans- and international diffusion of contention, resilience and borders during the Arab Uprisings. The senior discussants were Donatella Della porta from EUI Florence and Reinoud Leenders from Kings' College London. Each of the three participating doctoral students presented one paper that was afterwards extensively discussed by the two senior discussants and all other members present in the audience. It was very useful to receive insightful and constructive feedback by such renown researchers and fellow PhD students. I will revise teh paper and present an updated version at the ECPR Joint Sessions in Salamanca in April. 19/03 and 20/03/2014 - Berlin QCA Method Workshop I participated in a QCA Method Workshop by Prof Wagemann from Goethe University in Frankfurt at the BGSS. It was a good introduction into the methods logic. Unfortunately we did not go deeper into applying it and dealing with the configurations that underly QCA analysis. Nevertheless it was helpful and I am quite certain that this method will help me with my dissertation and current research. 01-14/02/2014 - Sao Paolo Summerschool in Case Study Methodology In Februrary 2014 I was at the Summerschool of the International Political Science Association (IPSA) in Sao Paolo and pariticipated in a course on case study methodology by Derek Beach (University of Aarhus). If you want to know more about this please see the blog entry. 05-12/10/2013 - Tunis Workshop on the Consitutional Process in Tunisia I am participating in a workshop on the constitutional process in Tunisia organized jointly by the University of Tübingen (Chair of Prof Thomas Diez) and the University of Tunis held in Tunisias capital. I am very excited about working together with other young researchers interested in Tunisia and especially coming together with Tunisians that are part of the constitution giving process. I am very much looking forward to establish ties to Tunisia that might be usefull for my later fieldwork. 26/09/2013 - Berlin Breakfast with the Swiss Ambassador I am participating in a breakfast workshop with the swiss ambassador at the swiss embassy in Berlin. The topic of the discussion is the swiss EU relationship. As I have lived & studied in Zürich for a year and had a lot of discussion at university and beyond on this topic I am looking forward to share and exchange my thoughts and opinions with the other participants and the ambassador. The event is organized by the alumni organization of the Hertie foundation. 24/09/2013 - Berlin Moderating the Debate: "The Mediterranean Space" I am moderated the kick-off event for the series "Zukunftsorte Europas" by the Berlin-Brandenburgische Akademie der Wissenschaft (BBAW) on the 24/09/13 at 18:00 in the Leibniz Saal of the BBAW right at Gendarmenmarkt. The theme of the evening is: "Der Mittelmeerraum" (The Mediterranean Space) The dicussants will be the french philosopher Rémy Brague and the german political scientist Claus Leggewie. I am looking forward to the presentations and a hopefully lively discussion afterwards with the audience. You can find the video of the event on the BBAW mediathek here 20/09/2013 - Zürich Defending my MA Thesis I am presenting the preliminary results of my MA-Thesis at the ETH in Zürich. Within the framework of my graduate studies I am presenting first results fron my MA-Thesis for the last time in Zürich at the colloquium of the Center for Comparative and International Studies (CIS). I am looking forward to some constructive critique and feeedback so that I can come back to Berlin with new ideas for the last weeks to finsih my MA-Thesis.
